I tried something new today. In the past, I've modeled how I want students to write descriptions of data then turned them loose. This year, I gave them back the sorting cards from yesterday as well as a worksheet where I had written 5 descriptions and they had to choose which graph it matched. Finally, we talked about how to write in context and I asked them to write a contextual description similar to the worksheet. One kid asked, "so you need us to write clearly enough that you know it's this graph and not another one?" YES! :)
Would you be open to sharing your card sort for describing distributions? Or tell me how you make them? Thx.
