Day 32... No AC :(

Today was a warm autumm day and as Murphy would predict,  the ac in our building went out.   It was quite stuffy in my room,  so we relocated to the outdoors.   At least we had a breeze out there!  :)

"The best way to learn is to do!"  Today we practiced more writing using StatKey.

Day 30... Writing Descriptions of Data

I tried something new today.   In the past, I've modeled how I want students to write descriptions of data then turned them loose.  This year,  I gave them back the sorting cards from yesterday as well as a worksheet where I had written 5 descriptions and they had to choose which graph it matched.   Finally,  we talked about how to write in context and I asked them to write a contextual description similar to the worksheet.   One kid asked, "so you need us to write clearly enough that you know it's this graph and not another one?"  YES! :)

Day 29... Describing Distributions

Today we started discussing how to describe a distribution.   As an introduction,  I referenced a news article from a few nights ago where the reporter faked a theft in order to do a story on eye witness accounts.   The more detail you give the cops the better sketch they can produce.   Similarly,  the more detail we give about a distribution,  the better we are able to visualize the graph and how the variable behaves.   Here,  students are sorting distributions by shape in order to see common patterns.

Day 28... Frog Ponds

I love finding toys at Dollar Tree to use in class!  I've had these frog pond sets for several years and is such a fun way to gather a quick data set.  The kids get so competitive!

Day 27.. Test Day!

There is something about the nice straight rows of a test day that just makes me happy :)

Day 26... Review Trivia

Today we reviewed for a test and I used a "Trivia Night" style approach.   We had 3 rounds of 4 questions.  It was funny to see how much some of the kids got into it.  :)

Day 25... Acrostic Time

For today's exit ticket,  students were asked to write an AP Stat Acrostic using words we've learned this week. .. :)

Day 25... Whiteboard Practice

Yesterday we learned the content for categorical distributions,  but today we spent time practicing by working at the whiteboards.

Day 24... M&M Distributions

Today we learned about marginal and conditional distributions using M&Ms... I love this activity!

Day 23.. Quiz day!

Not much to post since we quizzed over experiments today.   Tune back in tomorrow!  :)

Day 22.. Review Stations

I love my acrylic frames!  Today we reviewed for a quiz by doing a stations activity.  :)

Day 20... Whoops!

Today was the first day I forgot to take a photo.  I actually made it home during daylight hours today,  so hubby and I walked to dinner and I saw this on the way home.   :)

Day 19... Rough Day

I talked more today than I like.   Sadly,  days like that happen from time to time.  I realized that I had talked too much today when I noticed this "dot game" happening at one of the tables.   Maybe tomorrow will be a better day. ..

Day 18... Jigsaw Reading

We needed to wrap up a few details with regard to experimental design vocabulary so I gave each group four pages of text to read.   One person read about blinding,  one about statistical significance,  one about placebos, and the final one was about blocking.   Each student had 5 minutes to read and annotate their section before we broke into article based groups.   They had 5 minutes with their article based group to discuss the question on the board and other things they found interesting.   Finally they went back and shared out within their home groups.

Day 17... Against All Odds

We continued learning about experiments today and watched the Against All Odds video about studies.   After the video,  I asked students to do a 3-2-1 reflection with 3 things they learned,  2 vocabulary terms and their definitions and 1 question they had after the video.

Day 16... Word Toss

Today was a block day,  so after the Card Sort,  we worked on some language of experiments.   For their exit ticket,  we used the Word Toss strategy that I learned this summer in AVID training.   Students were given 8 words from the lesson (observational,  assignment,  treatment,  subject,  experiment,  response,  factor,  and random) and asked to write a single,  coherent sentence using as many of the words as possible.

Day 15.. Classifying Studies

After the quiz today,  students spent about 5 minutes reading some studies and sorting them into two piles.  I love listening in while students are discussing math!

Day 14... Quiz Review

Today was a dull day as we reviewed for our first quiz, but I do love seeing students refer back to their notes while working through some problems!
